The First Sikh Temple at Woolgoolga, on Hastings Street in the banana growing town of Woolgoolga on the New South Wales north coast, is the first gurdwara built in Australia, and an entry in our guide to [Gurdwaras in Australia](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/gurdwaras/gurdwaras-in-australia/). Opened in June 1968 by the town's Sikh farming families, the modest brick temple still stands, now beside the community's new gurdwara of 2019, and the two together are recognised as places of state heritage significance.

## What is the First Sikh Temple at Woolgoolga?

It is a gurdwara, the Sikh place of worship, whose name means the doorway to the Guru. Like every gurdwara it is built around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, and it runs a langar, a free vegetarian kitchen open to everyone. What makes this one singular is its place in history: it was the first purpose built Sikh temple in New South Wales and in Australia, raised by a small farming community decades before the big suburban gurdwaras of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth existed.

## How did Sikhs come to Woolgoolga?

Punjabi men had been arriving in Australia since the nineteenth century, most of them sojourners who meant to earn abroad, buy land and better housing back home, and return to their families in Punjab. Work was harsh and poorly paid, families could not be sent for, and the men leaned on each other, forming the chain migration networks that later carried whole communities across. The Second World War and the Partition of India in 1947 changed the thinking: settlement abroad began to look permanent rather than temporary.

War had also emptied the banana plantations of workers, and in the 1940s relationships with Australian businessmen brought Sikh workers south to Woolgoolga. Banana farming offered year round work and a reliable income, needed little starting capital, and gave Sikhs a rare chance to buy or lease land and establish a family in Australian society. Sons of working age followed, then women and children, and a lasting community took root on the coast. For years the faith was practised in homes and at work, because there was no formal gurdwara anywhere in the country.

## Building Australia's first gurdwara

In 1965 a committee of Sikh and Australian members formed to build Woolgoolga a gurdwara and to gather donations for it. The committee included members of the host community, whose welcome and practical help, in business, finances and correspondence, the Sikh families long remembered. A split developed within the community over decisions for the new temple, but planning continued. Land on Hastings Street was purchased by three members of the committee in 1967, and construction began that July.

With the Guru Granth Sahib Ji installed inside, to be read by a female granthi trained in reading the sacred script, and the flagpole and Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag, raised at its entrance, the First Sikh Temple opened for worship in June 1968, the first of its kind in Australia. For the decades that followed it was the social and religious heartbeat of the Woolgoolga Sikhs: a centre for worship and ceremony, for gatherings, and for language, music and scripture classes open to the Sikh and the wider Australian community alike.

## Australian in style, Sikh in spirit

The 1968 temple was deliberately designed in the Australian vernacular style: an open plan, brick and tile building that emulated the modest architecture of the region, with the langar hall beside it built in the same style and materials. It does not look like a gurdwara in Punjab, and that is the point of its heritage value. Together with its 2019 successor it holds the principal elements every gurdwara needs, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the langar where food is served to all, and the Nishan Sahib, while its fabric tells the story of migrants who built in the language of their new home.

## A second temple and a new gurdwara

The split in the building committee led to a second Woolgoolga gurdwara, the Guru Nanak Temple in River Street, built in 1970 and reconstructed in 1994, so the small town has had two Sikh temples for most of the past half century. Then, in 2019, the community opened a new, community funded gurdwara directly beside the First Sikh Temple, this time in the traditional Sikh architectural style, with its own langar. Standing together, the brick temple of 1968 and the domed gurdwara of 2019 show the community's beginnings, its growth and its pride in one view.

## Why is the First Sikh Temple heritage listed?

The First Sikh Temple and the new gurdwara are of state heritage significance in New South Wales for three reasons given in the temple's own heritage account. They are the first Sikh gurdwara built in the state and the country, and their building records the migration and permanent settlement of Sikhs from Punjab to Woolgoolga from the 1940s. They hold profound importance for the contemporary Sikh community, which still worships there. And together they form a representative example of a Sikh place of worship, reflecting the presence and evolution of the community: migrant beginnings, social growth and cultural pride.

## How do you visit the First Sikh Temple?

You visit at 6 Hastings Street, Woolgoolga, New South Wales, where the 1968 temple and the 2019 gurdwara stand together. Everyone is welcome, Sikh or not. Cover your head, remove your shoes, and sit on the floor of the prayer hall for as long as you wish; afterwards, stay for langar and eat with the congregation. Woolgoolga's second temple, the Guru Nanak Temple in River Street, is a short walk away, and the town's beaches and banana farms make the trip a small pilgrimage through the oldest Sikh story in Australia.
