Size here is measured in craft as much as in area: every one of its 24,000 pieces was carved by hand, numbered and assembled on site in only 18 months, following the guidelines of ancient Hindu scriptures on sacred architecture, with load bearing stone walls and no steel skeleton. The temple's opening in July 2007 brought together devotees from across Canada, in the presence of the then prime minister, the premier of Ontario and the mayor of Toronto, a sign of how central the mandir had already become to Hindu life in this country. ## How did Hindu temples begin in Canada? The Brampton story, reported by the Toronto Star and kept by Harvard's Pluralism Project, is the classic first chapter. Cheap agricultural land drew the Hindu Sabha community to Brampton in the late 1970s, where the temple began in a renovated farmhouse. The temple then drew a new immigrant community around it, looking for homes near the shrine. When highway building demolished the farmhouse temple, the community rebuilt at a far larger scale on The Gore Road, and new housing grew up around the new temple. Worship came first, and a neighbourhood followed. Toronto's other two temples show two more Canadian paths. ISKCON Toronto did not build at all: it bought a handsome 1899 church on Avenue Road around 1976 and made a Krishna temple inside a Gothic Revival landmark, keeping the building's place in the city's streetscape.
