In a quiet street in Sunshine North, in Melbourne's western suburbs, a temple grew out of a spear carried across the world. The Melbourne Murugan Temple, at 17 to 19 Knight Avenue, is Victoria's principal temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Tamil god shown with his Vel, or spear, and his consorts Valli and Devasena. It began in prayer meetings in homes and halls in 1991, opened its first stage in January 1999, and was consecrated in its permanent form on 28 January 2007\. In February 2026, after extensive renovation, the temple renewed itself with a Maha Kumbabhishekam that drew devotees from across Melbourne and beyond.

## What is the Melbourne Murugan Temple?

The Melbourne Murugan Temple is a Hindu temple in Sunshine North, Melbourne, dedicated to Lord Murugan and managed by the Melbourne Murugan Cultural Centre Inc. Its main shrine holds Murugan with Valli and Devasena (also called Teyvanai), and the temple also has shrines to Lord Vinayakar (Ganesha), a Sivalingam with Goddess Parvathi, the Navagrahas, the nine planetary deities, and a front shrine to Lord Hanuman. A resident priest performs daily pujas and abhishekams, the ritual bathing of the deities. The temple's own site calls it a spiritual home for Murugan devotees across Melbourne, and it now serves a Tamil Hindu community whose roots are largely Sri Lankan and South Indian.

## A Vel from Jaffna, and a father's wish

The temple's story, as its own history tells it, starts with one devotee. In 1991 Mrs Mani Selvendra, a Sri Lankan Tamil devotee, brought a sacred Vel from Jaffna in Sri Lanka: a spear crafted from five metals, gold, iron, copper, lead and silver. The Vel is Murugan's own weapon and symbol, and it became a focus for the community that formed around her. A committee began bringing devotees together for regular prayers in community halls and private homes across Melbourne that year.

Mrs Selvendra's wish, the temple says, was to fulfil the long held aspiration of her father, Mr V. Thambinayagam, himself a devoted follower of Lord Murugan. In 1995 the Melbourne Murugan Cultural Centre was formed for the single purpose of building a temple to Melbourne Murugan, under the chairmanship of Mr Ganeshamoorthy. It is a pattern Punjabi readers will recognise from their own diaspora history: prayers in homes first, then a trust, then land, then a permanent shrine built by the community itself.

## From a temporary hall to a permanent temple

The first stage of the temple at Knight Avenue was completed in January 1999, and the temple operated from a temporary facility there while the bigger plan took shape. The foundation of the permanent temple was laid in 2002, construction was completed in 2006, and the consecration ceremony took place on 28 January 2007, according to the Murugan temple directory at arunraj.org, which records the same dates as the temple's community histories.

Inside, the temple is arranged around three main shrines: Murugan with Valli and Devasena, Vinayakar, and the Sivalingam with Parvathi. There are two Vasantha Mandapams, festival pavilions, one for Murugan and one for Murugan in his six faced form as Shanmugar. Around them stand the parivara moorthis, the accompanying deities, including Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu and Durga, with a sacred space for the Navagrahas. The temple offers a long list of services, from archanai and abhishekam for individual families to vehicle pujas, weddings and life cycle ceremonies.

## Renewal: the Maha Kumbabhishekam of February 2026

Temples are traditionally renewed every few years, and in 2025 and 2026 Melbourne Murugan went through extensive renovation. A Balasthapana Pooja, the ceremony that temporarily moves the deities' presence during building work, was held on Sunday 9 November 2025\. Then, on Sunday 8 February 2026, the temple celebrated its Maha Kumbabhishekam, called in Tamil the Murugan Kuda Nanneeraddu Vila. In this consecration, water sanctified through Vedic rituals, homams and prayers is poured over the temple's towers and deities, renewing, devotees believe, the temple's spiritual energy. The temple describes the day as a milestone for Tamil culture in Australia as much as for worship, and thanked the devotees, volunteers and sponsors who carried the renovation through.

The renewal also speaks to where the temple is heading. Its own site says the Cultural Centre continues to work towards the vision of a fully traditional style temple in the future, even as the present temple serves daily worship. For now, the Sunshine North temple links Melbourne's Tamil Hindus to a much wider Murugan world: the same deity draws vast crowds at [Batu Caves in Malaysia](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/mandirs/batu-caves-sri-subramaniar/) at Thaipusam, and at the great Murugan temples of Tamil Nadu such as those around [Madurai](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/mandirs/meenakshi-madurai/).

## Visiting the Melbourne Murugan Temple

The temple stands at 17 to 19 Knight Avenue, Sunshine North, Victoria 3020, in Melbourne's western suburbs, and can be reached on 03 9367 3080\. Daily pujas and abhishekams are led by the resident priest, and visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to attend respectfully: dress modestly, remove footwear inside, and keep phones quiet during worship. Families often book individual archanai or abhishekam through the temple office. Whether you come for darshan of Murugan, for a festival, or simply to understand the Tamil Hindu community that built it, this is a temple with a clear origin story: one woman's Vel from Jaffna, her father's wish, and thirty years of community work in Melbourne's west.
