The Vaishno Devi Temple is a cave shrine to the goddess Vaishno Devi on Trikuta mountain above Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, and one of the busiest pilgrimage sites in India. Inside a 98-foot natural cave, three rock formations known as pindis are worshipped as the goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati: there are no statues or idols in the cave. The shrine is reached by a mountain trek of about 12 to 13 kilometres from the town of Katra, and the Shrine Board's figures put the 2023 pilgrimage at 9.52 million devotees.

## What is Vaishno Devi Temple?

Vaishno Devi Temple, also called Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple or Vaishno Devi Bhavan, is a Hindu cave temple dedicated to Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani or Vaishnavi, who is described as a manifestation of the goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarasvati. It stands at 5,200 feet on Trikuta mountain, in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 43 kilometres from Jammu city. Among [the mandirs of India](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/mandirs/mandirs-in-india/), few see as many pilgrims: it is consistently counted among the country's most visited religious sites.

## What are the three pindis in the cave?

The sanctum holds no idols. Pilgrims wade through the Charan Ganga stream to reach three natural rock formations, the pindis, which are worshipped as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati; Mahalakshmi is often identified with Vaishno Devi herself. A natural rock formation is interpreted as the goddess's hand, shown in a blessing gesture. Because crowds can reach about 20,000 pilgrims a day, artificial tunnels run alongside the original 98-foot cave so the darshan can keep moving.

## How long is the trek to Vaishno Devi?

The trek from Katra base camp to the Bhawan is about 12 to 13 kilometres uphill. The traditional route passes Banganga, Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari, about halfway up, where the goddess is believed to have meditated for nine months, and on through Sanjhichhat to the Bhawan. Helicopter, battery-car and ropeway services now supplement the walk, and ponies and palkis are available. The railway station at Katra, with code SVDK, opened on 4 July 2014, and in June 2025 Vande Bharat trains began running between Katra and Srinagar.

## Why is Bhairon Nath part of the yatra?

Above the Bhawan stands the Bhairon Nath temple, about two kilometres further up at Bhairon Ghati. Belief holds that the pilgrimage is not complete without visiting it on the return journey. A ropeway has connected the Bhawan to Bhairon since 2018\. Like the Ardhkuwari temple on the route, it is managed together with the main complex by the Shrine Board.

## Who manages the Vaishno Devi shrine?

The shrine is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, set up in August 1986 under the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1988\. Before that it was managed by the Dharmarth Trust, established in 1846 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, and by hereditary Baridar priests. The board's chairman is ex-officio the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Beyond the shrine, the board runs hospitals, a medical college, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, guest houses and langars.

## How old is the Vaishno Devi shrine?

Tradition attributes great antiquity to the shrine: legends say the Rig Veda mentions the Trikuta hill, that Arjuna worshipped here before the Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata, and that Rama met Vaishnavi in the Trikuta forests during his exile. These are traditional claims rather than documented history. One widely told story says the cave was rediscovered around the 10th century by a Brahmin named Shridhar. What is documented is how recent its mass popularity is: in 1976 the shrine could handle about 5,000 visitors a day, in 1981 annual visitors were around 900,000, and after the 1986 board takeover the yatra grew past 10 million in the peak year of 2011\. [Himalayan pilgrimage traditions](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/mandirs/badrinath-badrinath/), like those of [its fellow mountain shrines](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/mandirs/kedarnath-uttarakhand/), have shaped how the yatra is run.
