## Early life

Guru Angad Dev Ji was born as Lehna on 31 March 1504 in the village of Matte-di-Sarai, in what is now the Muktsar district of Punjab. His father, Pheru Mal, was a trader of the Trehan Khatri clan, and his mother, Mata Ramo, is also remembered as Sabhirai, Mansa Devi or Daya Kaur. His grandfather, Baba Narayan Das Trehan, had his ancestral house in the same village. When Babur's armies invaded, the family had to flee their home and settled at Khadur Sahib, a village by the Beas river near what is now Tarn Taran.

At sixteen, Lehna married Khivi in January 1520\. They had two sons, Dasu and Datu, and two daughters, Amro and Anokhi. Before he ever met Guru Nanak, Lehna was a religious teacher in Khadur and a priest at a temple dedicated to the goddess Durga, and each year he led a party of pilgrims to the Jawalamukhi temple.

On one such pilgrimage, passing through Kartarpur, the town Guru Nanak had founded, Lehna stopped and spoke with the Guru. The meeting transformed him. He stayed on in Kartarpur and served Guru Nanak for six to seven years, renouncing his old way of life.

## The tests that made him Guru

Sikh tradition remembers the tests by which Nanak chose Lehna as his successor over his own sons. Once a jug fell into the mud, and Nanak asked his sons to pick it up. They refused the menial task. Lehna lifted it out, washed it clean and presented it to Nanak full of water. On 7 September 1539, Nanak touched Lehna, renamed him Angad, meaning my own limb, and installed him as the second Sikh Guru. When Nanak died on 22 September 1539, Angad could not bear the separation and withdrew into a disciple's house in grief, until Baba Buddha found him after a long search and brought him back to lead the sangat.

At first very few Sikhs accepted Angad as their leader, while Nanak's sons claimed the succession for themselves. Angad answered by holding fast to Nanak's teachings and building the community through service.

## Did Guru Angad Dev Ji invent Gurmukhi?

Guru Angad Dev Ji is credited in Sikh tradition with the Gurmukhi script, today the standard script for Punjabi in India and the script of the Guru Granth Sahib. Strictly speaking, he did not create it from nothing. Scholars including Kahn Singh Nabha have shown that the glyphs and symbols of Gurmukhi pre-date Sikhism, and Guru Nanak himself wrote at least one hymn in an acrostic form. What Guru Angad did, around 1530 to 1535, was to standardise and improve the regional scripts into a single clear Gurmukhi script, and to make it the script of the Sikh community. He opened schools where children learned to read and write in it, and tradition says every Sikh was commanded to learn the script, so that Gurbani could be written, read and preserved exactly as spoken.

He also began the great work of preserving Nanak's words. He had Nanak's hymns written down and scrutinised the compilation himself, laying the groundwork for the Sikh scripture and for a vernacular Punjabi literature. His own contribution to that scripture is 62 or 63 saloks, about one percent of the Guru Granth Sahib: sharp moral verses on humility, service and the dangers of pride. Some traditions also credit him with commissioning the first Janamsakhi, an account of Nanak's life, though scholars debate which work it was and whether it survives.

## The langar, the akhara and the school

From his seat at Khadur Sahib, Guru Angad Dev Ji strengthened the institutions Nanak had founded. He gave the langar a clear system in Sikh centres, setting rules and training for the sevadars who ran the kitchen, and insisting it be a place of rest and refuge where every visitor was treated with courtesy. His wife Mata Khivi personally cooked and served in the kitchen, and her devotion is praised by name in the Guru Granth Sahib, a rare honour.

Angad earned his own living by twisting coarse grass into strings for cots, and every offering went into the common fund. It was a living lesson that honest work is honourable and that there is no place for idle recluses in the community.

Unusually for a spiritual leader of his time, he placed great emphasis on physical fitness. He founded the Mall Akhara, a wrestling arena at Khadur Sahib, where Sikhs trained their bodies alongside their minds, with exercises, martial arts and games after the daily prayers. He founded many such akharas in the surrounding villages and taught his followers to stay away from tobacco and intoxicants. A healthy body, he taught, was the vessel of a healthy spirit.

Around 1540 the second Mughal emperor Humayun visited him at Khadur Sahib, after losing his throne to Sher Shah Suri at Kannauj. When Humayun grew angry that the Guru, seated and teaching children, did not rise at once to greet him, Angad reminded him that when he should have fought he had fled, and now he raised his sword against a man at prayer. Tradition says the Guru then blessed Humayun, assuring him that one day he would regain his throne.

## Later life and succession

Like Nanak before him, Guru Angad Dev Ji chose his successor on merit rather than blood. Amar Das, a Hindu pilgrim turned devotee, had heard Guru Angad's daughter Bibi Amro singing Nanak's hymns and sought out the Guru in 1539\. Though past seventy, Amar Das woke before dawn to fetch water for Angad's bath, cooked for the volunteers and spent long hours in meditation. In 1552 Angad named him the third Guru. His own sons were passed over, and when Datu travelled to Amar Das's court and struck the new Guru with his foot in protest, Amar Das answered with humility. After Angad's death the community's headquarters moved from Khadur to Goindwal, because Angad's sons claimed their father's property at Khadur.

Guru Angad Dev Ji died on 29 March 1552 at Khadur Sahib.

## Legacy

Guru Angad Dev Ji led the Sikhs for thirteen years, and his achievements were foundational. By giving the Sikhs their script, he gave them their literature. By insisting on education, physical discipline and selfless service, he gave them their character. The Gurmukhi script remains his most visible monument, used daily by millions of Punjabis and enshrined as the script of the Guru Granth Sahib.
