Jeth (ਜੇਠ) is the third month of the [Nanakshahi calendar](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/nanakshahi-calendar/), the Sikh solar calendar, and of the traditional Punjabi desi year. It is one of the twelve [Desi Mahine](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/nanakshahi-calendar/), the months whose order and character the Gurus themselves describe in the Barah Maha poetry of the Guru Granth Sahib. Jeth begins on its sangrand, 15 May, and runs for 31 days to 14 June. In Punjab it is the height of summer: the season of the scorching loo wind, white midday light and fields resting between the wheat harvest and the monsoon. It follows [Vaisakh](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/nanakshahi-calendar/) and is followed by [Harh](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/nanakshahi-calendar/).

## The month and its dates

Jeth has 31 days. In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar, adopted by the SGPC in 2003 and designed by Pal Singh Purewal, 1 Jeth always falls on 15 May and the month always ends on 14 June, so its sangrand never moves. The name Jeth is the Punjabi form of the old Indic month name Jyeshtha, and the month belonged to Punjabi life for centuries through the Bikrami calendar, in which its start drifted slowly against the seasons. The Nanakshahi reform kept the traditional month names, which are taken from Gurbani, and pinned them to fixed solar dates so that the months stay with their seasons.

One honest complication is worth knowing. The SGPC amended its calendar in later years, and under the amended calendar some observances are again worked out from the traditional lunar tithis, so a Gurpurab's Gregorian date can differ between the two calendars in a given year. The dates given as fixed on this page are the 2003 Nanakshahi calendar's dates; where the SGPC's current calendar places a day differently, that is noted alongside.

## Season in Punjab

Jeth is the peak of the Punjab summer. The loo, a hot and dry wind, blows across the plains on most afternoons, the sun stands almost overhead at noon, and the land turns pale gold and dusty. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Barah Maha pictures the month in just this way: the earth heats up like a furnace, and every living thing searches for shade and water. Wells, canals and village ponds become the centre of the day, field work is pushed into the early morning and the evening, and the whole countryside waits for rains that are still weeks away.

## The farming cycle in Jeth

By Jeth the wheat harvest is finished and the granaries are full. Farmers plough and level the empty fields, repair the bunds and water channels, and turn their minds to the kharif season ahead. Cotton, sown in April and May, is up and growing and needs weeding and water. The spring sugarcane stands tall. The most forward-looking work of the month is the paddy nursery: rice seedbeds are sown in Jeth so that strong seedlings stand ready for transplanting into flooded fields once the monsoon breaks in Harh. Fodder crops such as jowar are also sown, to carry the cattle through the hot weeks until the rains come.

## Festivals and Gurpurabs in Jeth

The fixed Nanakshahi calendar places two Gurpurabs in Jeth. The Parkash Gurpurab of [Guru Amar Das Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/guru-amar-das-ji/), the third Guru, falls on 9 Jeth, which is 23 May. The Gurgaddi Gurpurab of [Guru Hargobind Ji](https://jugti.com/kosh/religion/sikhism/guru-amar-das-ji/), marking his succession as the sixth Guru in 1606, falls on 28 Jeth, which is 11 June. Under the SGPC's amended calendar these days are set by the traditional reckoning instead: in 2026 the SGPC calendar kept Guru Amar Das Ji's Parkash on 30 April and Guru Hargobind Ji's Gurgaddi on 8 June, which it counted as 25 Jeth. Sangrand itself, the first day of the month, is marked in gurdwaras with kirtan and an ardas for the month ahead.

## Jeth in the Barah Maha

Two of the Guru Granth Sahib's great poems walk through the twelve months. In Raag Majh, Guru Arjan Dev Ji opens the month with this line: ਹਰਿ ਜੇਠਿ ਜੁੜੰਦਾ ਲੋੜੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵੰਨਿ ੥, which means: in the month of Jeth, seek to be joined with the Lord, before whom all bow. His teaching runs through the verse: the one who grasps the hem of the Lord, the True Friend, cannot be tied down by any bondage, and the Naam is a jewel and a pearl that no thief can steal. The verse closes by calling Jeth joyful for the bride whose forehead carries good destiny and who finds the company of the holy.

In Raag Tukhari, Guru Nanak Dev Ji calls the month of Jeth sublime and asks how the soul-bride could forget her Beloved in it, even while the plains burn like a furnace and all she can do is offer her prayer. In both poems the burning month is not a curse. It is the season whose heat drives the soul to look for the one shade that never moves.

## When does Jeth begin and end?

Jeth begins on 15 May and ends on 14 June in the fixed Nanakshahi calendar. Its first day, 15 May, is the sangrand of Jeth, and the next day, 15 June, is the sangrand of Harh.

## How many days are there in Jeth?

Jeth has 31 days. It is one of the first five Nanakshahi months, Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh and Sawan, which have 31 days each; the remaining seven months have 30.

## Which Gurpurabs fall in Jeth?

In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar, Jeth carries the Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Amar Das Ji on 9 Jeth (23 May) and the Gurgaddi Gurpurab of Guru Hargobind Ji on 28 Jeth (11 June).
