Algoza (ਅਲਗੋਜ਼ਾ), pronounced al-go-zaa, is the Punjabi name for a paired folk flute: two beak flutes played together at the same time, one carrying the melody and the other holding a steady drone. It is a masculine noun. Skilled players keep the sound unbroken with quick, bouncing breaths.

## Meaning

Reference accounts describe the algoza as a paired woodwind used by Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Kutchi, Rajasthani and Baloch folk musicians. The two pipes may be tied together or simply held together in the hands. Over time one pipe was made shorter than the other to improve the sound, and players traditionally speak of the longer pipe as the male and the shorter as the female. Beeswax is used to adjust the tuning.

## How is the algoza played?

The player blows into both flutes at once, so the air must keep flowing without a pause. The trick is the quick recapture of breath on the beat, which gives algoza playing its swinging, bouncing rhythm. One pipe shapes the tune while the other never leaves its drone note, so a single musician can sound like two instruments in conversation. In Punjab the algoza is often heard alongside the tumbi at folk gatherings.

## Where does the algoza come from?

Accounts collected on the reference page trace a very old Mesopotamian origin for an instrument of this twin flute type, reaching the subcontinent through Iran with changes along the way. Those early origin claims are best read as reported tradition rather than settled fact. What is certain from living practice is the instrument's deep home in the folk music of Sindh and Punjab, and noted Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa is listed among its well known performers.

## Is the algoza the same as a bansuri?

No. A bansuri is a single flute, while the algoza is always a pair played together. That second pipe is the whole point: the drone runs under the melody from start to finish, giving Punjabi folk tunes their full, humming base even when only one musician is playing.
