## Meaning

Ardas means a petition or humble request, from the Persian word arzdasht. It is the formal Sikh prayer, always performed standing with folded hands before the Guru Granth Sahib. It is said at the end of every divan (congregational service), and also whenever Sikhs begin or complete something significant, a journey, an exam, a new venture, a wedding.

The prayer follows a fixed structure. It opens with the invocation 'Ik Oankar Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh, Sri Bhagauti Ji Sahai', victory belongs to the one God; the divine sword lends its aid. Then it remembers, one by one, the ten Sikh Gurus, the Panj Piare, the four Sahibzade (the Guru's sons), the forty Mukte who died at Muktsar, the martyrs and all devoted Sikhs who kept the faith through persecution.

After this remembrance comes the actual petition, the specific request of the moment, such as success in an undertaking or wellbeing of a person. The Ardas closes with the famous lines asking that through the Guru's name the spirit stays ever-rising, and that by God's will all beings prosper:

Nanak, through the Name comes rising spirit; by Your will, may all be well. The prayer ends with 'Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh', repeated by the whole sangat.

## Origin and history

Collective supplication is as old as the Sikh sangat itself, the early Sikhs gathered to pray together from Guru Nanak's time. The Ardas in something close to its present form developed over the eighteenth century, when Sikhs facing persecution would gather in secret and pray for the Panth's survival, remembering their martyrs by name.

The invocation to 'Sri Bhagauti', the divine sword, God's power to destroy evil, comes from the opening of the Chandi di Var, the ballad of the goddess's battle, which stands at the head of the Ardas. The remembrance of the forty Mukte refers to the forty Sikhs who deserted Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur, then returned to fight and die beside him at the Battle of Muktsar in 1705; the Guru tore up their letter of desertion and blessed them as the liberated ones.

The text was standardised in the Sikh Rehat Maryada, so the Ardas said in Amritsar today is the same as the one said in Toronto or London.

## Cultural context

Ardas is the moment in a Sikh service when the whole congregation stands as one. Anyone, the granthi or any Sikh man or woman, may perform it. After the Ardas, karah prashad, the blessed sweet pudding, is distributed to everyone present.

Sikhs also do a personal ardas at home: standing before a picture of the Gurus or simply with folded hands, they ask for guidance before exams, operations, journeys or new jobs. Doing ardas is considered the proper way to begin anything, Sikhs say no undertaking should start without it.
