What does att mean in Punjabi? Att (ਅੱਤ), pronounced utt with a short doubled t in the middle, is Punjabi slang for taking something to the extreme: so intense, so impressive or so much that it goes past the usual limit. Young speakers use it as praise, as surprise, and sometimes as a warning.

## Meaning

At its heart, att is about the far edge of a scale. Punjabi words for the idea of extreme circle around having no limit, and att is the short, punchy slang word young people actually say. When someone says att kar ti, they mean the person did the extreme thing: they outdid everyone, or they went completely over the top. The word carries energy rather than a fixed judgement, so the tone of voice decides whether it lands as a compliment or a complaint.

## How is att used in everyday speech?

The commonest frame is att plus a verb. Att kar ti praises a performance, a look or a result that smashed expectations. A hit song title by the Punjabi singer Jassi Gill is built on exactly this phrase, with the lyric translation presenting a young woman's beauty as the thing that has done the extreme. Att chakk ti means someone raised the roof or created a sensation. Turned the other way, att ho gayi means things got out of hand, and att na kar is a plain instruction: do not overdo it.

## Is att a compliment or a complaint?

It can be either, and context decides. Said with a grin about a singer, a cricketer or a friend's new look, att is strong praise: they took it to another level. Said about noise, crowds, prices or someone's behaviour, the same word complains that a limit has been crossed. Listen for the verb and the tone, not the word alone.

## How is att different from ghaint?

Ghaint, which has its own Kosh entry, praises quality: something is awesome or superb. Att is about degree: something has been pushed to the limit, for better or for worse. A performance can be ghaint without being att, but when a crowd says att kar ti, they mean the performer went beyond what anyone expected.
