Basant (ਬਸੰਤ) is the Punjabi word for spring: the mild season between the cold of winter and the heat of summer, when mustard fields turn yellow, wheat heads fill out and trees leaf again. In Punjab its arrival is marked by Basant Panchami, yellow clothes and kites in the sky.

## What does basant mean in Punjabi?

Basant means spring. Preply's guide to seasons in Punjabi gives basant rutt, spring, as the season of renewal and blooming, first in both the modern four-season list and the traditional six-season list. Say basant on its own for the season, or add rutt (ਰੁੱਤ, season) to be exact: basant di rutt, the spring season. Its far pole in the year is patjhar (ਪਤਝੜ), autumn, when the leaves that open in basant fall again.

## Where does the word basant come from?

Basant comes from Sanskrit vasanta, which Wiktionary glosses as the brilliant season, spring, and traces back to an old Indo-European word for spring. The word travelled into the languages of the plains and softened on the way: Punjabi says basant, written ਬਸੰਤ, and Urdu writes it بسنت. In Punjab it is the short, kind stretch after the fog and cold lift and before the hard heat, when the winter crop ripens and the days are warm without being harsh.

## How is basant celebrated in Punjab?

The season steps in with a festival. The Punjab festivals guide at Webindia123 calls Basant Panchami the most famous of the seasonal fairs: it heralds the advent of spring, when fields of mustard give rural Punjab a unique and colourful sight in golden yellow. Villages hold Basant fairs, people put on yellow costumes to match the season, and kite flying was the day's popular entertainment, the sky full of kites when the breeze was good. Yellow is the season's colour, from the sarson flowers to the clothes at the mela.

## How is basant used in everyday Punjabi?

Beyond the calendar, basant is how Punjabi talks about freshness: a garden in full bloom, a face lit up, a good stretch after hard months. Songs reach for the season when they want hope after winter. To ask about it, say basant di rutt kadon aundi hai, when does the spring season come, and to welcome it, basant aa gayi hai, spring has come.
