Today doli also names that farewell itself: the bride's departure to begin married life with her husband's family. ## Meaning Wedding glossaries define doli in a single line: the palanquin or vehicle in which the bride is carried away after the wedding. The word therefore holds two linked ideas at once. The first is the object itself, a covered seat carried by bearers. The second is the journey and the moment it stands for, because in everyday Punjabi speech people speak of the doli leaving, the doli being ready, or the doli time, and everyone understands that the farewell has arrived. ## What happens at the doli? At the doli, the bride says goodbye to her parents, her siblings and the home she grew up in, and then leaves for her husband's home. Accounts of the custom describe her throwing puffed rice back over her head as she goes, a gesture of good wishes and thanks to the family she is leaving. Her brothers or male cousins walk with her to her husband, farewell songs are sung, and the mood is famously mixed: pride and joy on one side, tears on the other. ## Why is the doli so emotional? It is emotional because it marks a real change of home and of daily life, not just a change of address. The bride leaves as a daughter of one house and arrives as a daughter in law of another, and both families feel that shift in the same few minutes. At the new home the welcome softens the parting: the mother in law is described as greeting the bride with a glass of water circled around her and then offered to her, a sign of acceptance and blessing. ## Is a real doli still used today? Usually not as transport. Most brides today leave in a decorated car, and wedding guides note that the palanquin often survives as a symbol: a doli styled entrance, a backdrop, or a short ceremonial carry for photographs.
