Dukh (ਦੁੱਖ), also written dukkh, means sorrow, pain and suffering in Punjabi: the hard feeling that comes with loss, illness, failure or trouble. It covers both pain of the body and pain of the heart, and it is one half of the pair sukh and dukh, comfort and sorrow, that Punjabi speakers use to describe the ups and downs of life. ## Dukh in everyday speech At home, dukh is a plain, everyday word. Someone may say that a family is going through dukh after a death or a loss, or speak of the dukh of a long illness. The word is not formal or poetic on its own: it is how people name a hard time honestly, without exaggeration. A related everyday form is dukhi, meaning sad or suffering, used for a person who is in sorrow. Dukh is also the word people reach for when they share a burden. Telling a trusted person about your dukh is seen as a way of lightening it, and listening to the dukh of others with patience is part of ordinary family and village life. ## Sukh and dukh: the pair Punjabi rarely talks about dukh alone for long. It is usually paired with its opposite, sukh, as sukh dukh: the good times and the hard times that come to every house. Gurbani returns to this pair again and again, teaching that neither state lasts forever and that a person should stay steady in both. One well known teaching turns the pair around: dukh can work like a medicine that brings a person back to what matters, while careless sukh can work like a sickness that feeds pride. The prayer collection known as Dukh Bhanjani Sahib, made up of hymns by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, takes its name from this word: bhanjani means destroyer or crusher, so the title means the destroyer of pain. Families often turn to it in a time of illness or trouble. ## Is dukh only about sadness? No. Dukh is wider than sadness. It can mean physical pain, illness, hardship or trouble, as well as grief of the heart. Sadness is one part of it, not the whole word. ## What is the opposite of dukh? The opposite of dukh is sukh, meaning peace, comfort and happiness. Punjabi speakers usually name the two together, as sukh dukh, because life moves between them. ## How is dukh used in a sentence?
