hali

Say it**HAA-lee**Type**Noun**Shahmukhiہالی

In short

A hali is the ploughman, the man who walks behind the bullocks and drives the hal through the field. In old Punjab he was often a hired hand, and the word carries both the dignity and the hardship of that labour.

## How it's used

1. 1ਹਾਲੀ ਨੇ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਹਲ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ।The ploughman yoked the plough early in the morning.
2. 2ਹਾਲੀ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਖੇਤ ਵਾਹਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।A field cannot be ploughed without a ploughman.
3. 3ਉਹ ਹਾਲੀ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤ ਹੈ, ਮਿੱਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ।He is a ploughman’s son, rooted in the soil.

## Meaning

ਹਾਲੀ (hali) is the ploughman, the man who holds the hal (plough) and drives the bullocks through the field. In the age of bullock farming, the hali was the skilled worker at the very centre of sowing: his hands on the plough, his voice guiding the pair of bullocks, his feet walking every furrow of the field. The landowner might own the land, but it was the hali who actually turned the soil.

Often the hali was not the owner but a hired hand, a farm labourer or a younger son of the house. The word therefore carries both respect for skill and the memory of hard, low-paid labour: long days in sun and dust, wages counted in grain.

## Origin and etymology

The word is built directly on ਹਲ (hal), the plough. A hali is, quite literally, “the man of the plough”, the one whose work is the hal. This kind of formation is common in Punjabi, where the tool gives its name to the worker.

## Cultural context

Before tractors reached Punjab’s villages in the 1960s and 70s, the hali’s day set the rhythm of the sowing season. He rose before dawn, fed and watered the bullocks, and yoked them as the first light came. Ploughing demanded judgement: how deep to cut, how to turn at the field’s end, how to keep the furrows straight across an acre. A good hali was prized, and farmers spoke of skilled ploughmen the way they spoke of good bullocks, with open admiration.

The hali lives on in Punjabi folk songs and sayings, where the ploughman walking behind his bullocks is an image of honest toil. With the tractor, the hired hali has largely disappeared from Punjab’s fields, but the word survives, in old songs, in stories told by grandparents, and in the memory of what farming once demanded of the human body.
