In Punjab the picture it calls up is specific: a hot season windstorm that picks up dust from ploughed and parched land. Dictionaries record two stronger forms for a great storm: kaali boli haneri, the black dust storm, and anhi haneri, a blinding storm. The darkness is part of the word's feel: when a haneri arrives, the middle of the day can look like evening. ## How is haneri used in everyday speech? People say haneri aayi when a storm comes up, and Punjab weather reports pair it with rain as meeh haneri, rain and storm together. When a haneri is on its way, doors and windows are shut against the dust, washing is pulled in from the rooftop, and farmers look anxiously at the standing crop. Fine dust settles on everything indoors, and the first job once the wind drops is sweeping it out. In loose talk the word also serves for any sudden rush or uproar, much as English speakers call a busy scene a storm. ## Is a haneri the same as a toofaan? Nearly, but haneri paints the more local picture. Toofaan names any violent storm, while haneri points to the wind and dust storm of the plains, the one that darkens the sky over the fields.
