## What does hun mean in Punjabi?

Hun (ਹੁਣ), pronounced HOON, is the Punjabi adverb for now: at this moment, at the present time. It is one of the first words a learner needs, because Punjabi speakers reach for it constantly, to say what is happening right now, what has changed, and what should be done next, this very minute rather than later.

## How is hun used in everyday speech?

Hun usually sits just before the verb, and it pins the action to the present moment. Dictionaries list it as the standard Punjabi rendering of both now and at present, and everyday speech bears that out: a mother calls a child with hun aa, come now, and a shopkeeper promises hun hi, right now, this instant, when he adds the emphatic hi. Paired with tak it makes hun tak, until now or so far, the phrase people use when something expected has still not happened: the bus has not come hun tak.

The word also carries a quiet sense of change. To say someone hun does something often means they did not do it before: hun oh roz savere uthda hai, now he gets up early every day, hints at a new habit. In questions it can sound impatient or puzzled, as in hun ki kariye, what do we do now, the question a family asks when a plan falls through and a fresh decision is needed on the spot.

## Is hun the same as ajj kallh?

No. Ajj kallh, literally today and tomorrow, means nowadays or these days: it spreads across a general stretch of time, the way people live now compared with the past. Hun is narrower and sharper. It points to this moment only. A speaker describing prices rising ajj kallh is talking about the times; a speaker saying hun chaliye, let us go now, wants to leave before the sentence is finished.

## What is the difference between hun and hune?

Hune (ਹੁਣੇ) is hun with an added push: it means just now, a moment ago, or right away. Looking back, hune tells you something happened only moments earlier: oh hune gaya, he left just now. Looking forward, it makes an instruction urgent: hune aa, come right away. Hun states the present; hune squeezes it, shrinking the gap between the words and the action to almost nothing.
