## What does jana mean in Punjabi?

Jana means to go, and it is used for everything from a trip to the bazaar to a plan for next year. Learner guides note that, beyond simple travel, it carries intentions and future plans: saying where you are going is often a way of saying what you mean to do. Its present forms follow gender, janda for a man or boy and jandi for a woman or girl, so she goes to school every day is uh har roz school jandi hai.

The question form is just as common as the statement. Tusin kithe ja rahe ho, where are you going, is the greeting half of Punjab calls across a lane when someone steps out with a bag in hand, and chalo chaliye, let's go, is the phrase that ends a visit and gets a family moving toward the door, the bus or the fields.

## How do you tell someone to go in Punjabi?

The short command is ja, go, for a child or someone you know well. The polite command is jao, for elders, guests and groups. The pair works exactly like auna's commands in reverse: aa and aao call someone toward you, ja and jao send them on their way, and Punjabi children learn all four early because home life runs on them all day long.

## What is the past tense of jana?

The past tense of jana surprises learners, because the stem changes completely: giya for a man or boy, went, and gayi for a woman or girl. Grammar guides list jana among Punjabi's irregular verbs for exactly this reason, with munda giya, the boy went, and kuri gayi, the girl went, as the model pair. The future keeps the jana stem instead: javega, he will go, and javegi, she will go.

## Jana as a helping verb

After another verb, jana stops meaning travel and starts meaning completion. In kha jana, to eat up, it tells you the food was finished completely, not just tasted.
