Punjabi leans on the word twice over: the jeebh is where flavours land, and it is also the tongue a person speaks with, so a mithi jeebh, a sweet tongue, means kind and gentle speech. ## What does jeebh mean in Punjabi? Jeebh means the tongue. The Punjabi entry on Wiktionary gives ਜੀਭ (jeebh), a feminine noun with the Shahmukhi spelling جِیبھ, and lists the older variant ਜਿੱਭ (jibbha), still heard in speech. The old dictionary material gathered by Rekhta from Platts defines jibh the same way, the tongue, and then spends most of its space on the phrases the tongue builds, because in this language the tongue is judged by what it says as much as by what it tastes. ## Where does the word jeebh come from? Jeebh is inherited from Old Punjabi, through Prakrit jibbha, from Sanskrit jihva, the tongue. Behind jihva stands one of the oldest reconstructed words in the Indo European family, the same root that gives Latin lingua, the ancestor of English words like language and lingual. The Punjabi form stayed close to the Prakrit jibbha, which is why the variant spelling ਜਿੱਭ survives beside the standard ਜੀਭ, and why the two are still swapped in casual writing. ## How is jeebh used in everyday Punjabi? The tongue's phrases are about appetite and about talk. The old dictionaries record jiibh chaatna, smacking the tongue, for longing after something tasty or out of reach, and jiibh kaatna, biting the tongue, for the moment shock stops your words mid sentence. A two faced person has, in the sharpest of these sayings, a jeebh under the jeebh: a tongue beneath the tongue, saying one thing while meaning another. In Punjabi kitchens the word stays literal and busy: jeebh jal gayi, my tongue is burnt, is the warning that travels around the first cup of very hot chah. ## What does a sweet tongue mean in Punjabi? A mithi jeebh, a sweet tongue, describes someone whose words are gentle and well chosen, and it is praise Punjabis give freely: ohdi jeebh badi mithi hai, her tongue is very sweet, means people leave her company feeling respected. The opposite, a tez jeebh, a sharp tongue, warns of speech that cuts.
