Kheti (ਖੇਤੀ, pronounced KHAY-tee) is the Punjabi word for farming and agriculture, the work of growing crops from the soil. Built on khet (ਖੇਤ, field), it covers everything a farming family does through the year: ploughing, sowing, watering, weeding, harvesting, and carrying the crop to the mandi to sell. ## Word origin Kheti grows straight out of khet, the Punjabi word for a field or plot of farmland. If the khet is the place, kheti is what happens on it, the labour, the seasons and the skill of raising a crop. Linguists trace khet itself to the old Sanskrit word kṣetra, meaning field, which makes kheti one of the oldest-rooted words in the countryside's vocabulary. ## Kheti in the life of Punjab In Punjab, kheti is more than an occupation; it is the rhythm rural life runs on. The year turns on two harvests: wheat (kanak) sown in winter and cut in spring, and paddy (jhona) planted with the monsoon rains. In the 1960s and 1970s, Punjab stood at the heart of India's Green Revolution, when new wheat and rice varieties transformed its fields and made the state the country's grain basket. Even today, saying a family is “in kheti” tells you how they live, what their year looks like, and what gets discussed at the chaupal. ## What is the difference between kheti and kheti-baari? Kheti-baari (ਖੇਤੀ-ਬਾੜੀ) is the fuller, slightly more formal term for agriculture as a whole, the sector, the science, the industry. Kheti is the everyday word: what a farmer does. In Punjab's schools, agriculture is even taught as a subject called Kheti-Bari, the Punjab School Education Board publishes a Class 8 textbook under exactly that name. ## Who is a kisan? A kisan (ਕਿਸਾਨ) is the person who does kheti, a farmer or cultivator. The two words are inseparable: kheti is the work, kisan is the worker. In village speech, calling someone a kisan carries respect for the labour; in the cities, it has also become the word for the farming community as a shared identity. ## Everyday usage “Kheti karna”, to do farming, is the standard phrase. A family might say “sāḍī kheti hai” (farming is ours) to mean the land is their livelihood. When a young person leaves a city job and returns to the village, people say he has come back to kheti.
