Kyon means why, for what reason. Columbia University's Punjabi pages place it in the core set of question words, matching English who, what, where, when, why and how, and illustrate it with a smile: oh kyon hass reha hai, why is he laughing? Talkpal's Punjabi grammar guide gives the same list and the same spelling, ਕਿਉਂ, and notes that these question words keep one spelling for all genders and numbers, so kyon never changes its shape. A why question invites a because answer, and Punjabi answers kyon with kyonke (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ), because: kyon aaya, kyonke kamm si, why did you come, because there was work. Kyon also teams up with the other question words when a question needs two answers at once. Talkpal gives the pattern kithe te kadon milange, where and when will we meet, and the same joining works for why: kaun te kyon aaya si, who had come, and why? ## How do you answer a kyon question? Start with kyonke, because, and give the reason plainly: main late ho gaya kyonke bus late si, I got late because the bus was late. In livelier speech the answer is often just the reason itself, with the because understood. And a kyon question is not always a demand for facts: kyon, ki hoya, why, what happened, is how Punjabis open a concerned conversation, and in songs and everyday teasing, a stretched kyonn can carry affectionate protest rather than a real question. ## Is kyon ever rude? It can sound sharp on its own, the way a bare why can in English, so Punjabi softens it the same way: add a little warmth around it. Kyon veere, ki gall, why brother, what is the matter, asks with care, while tusi dasso kyon asks an elder politely.
