A luhar is not a machine worker in a factory sense: the picture the word carries is of a craftsman at a forge, shaping hot metal by hand and eye. ## What does a luhar make and repair? He makes and repairs the iron tools a village runs on. In farm country that means the hal, the plough, sickles for cutting fodder and harvest, spades, axes, knives, hinges, chains and cart fittings. The work begins at the bhatthi, the forge fire, where the iron is heated until it is soft enough to shape, and it is beaten flat or to a point on the anvil with a hathora, a hammer. Sharpening is half the trade: a blunt sickle or ploughshare comes back from the luhar ready for another season. ## How is luhar used in everyday speech? People speak of going to the luhar the way they speak of going to any village craftsman: pind da luhar, the village blacksmith, is a fixed figure in older Punjabi life. Farmers took broken tools to him before sowing and harvest, and households took knives and axes to be sharpened. Factory made tools have taken over much of this work, so the word today often carries a picture of the older village, even though working smiths are still found in towns and at farm workshops. ## Is luhar the same word as lohar? Yes, it is the same word in a different spelling dress. Punjabi lists write luhar, while the form Lohar is the one most often seen across South Asia for the traditional blacksmith community, and older writers even used Lohara as a plain synonym for blacksmith.
