She is your aunt by marriage, not by blood, which is why Punjabi keeps her separate from your masi, your mother's own sister. When mama marries, his wife steps into the nanke household and the children of the house gain a mami. The word is the feminine partner of mama, just as chachi pairs with chacha on your father's side. Her own children are your maler cousins, your mother's brother's children, and in the kinship lists her place sits in the mother's brother's row: mama, mami and their children form one branch of the nanke. ## How is a mami different from a masi? Both women are aunts on your mother's side, but they arrive there by different roads. Your masi is your mother's sister, her own blood, while your mami is your mother's brother's wife, who joined the family through marriage. Punjabi marks the difference in the title itself, so one word never has to cover both women. ## Why is mami addressed as Mami Ji? Ji is a small honorific of respect added to family titles across Punjab, turning mami into Mami Ji and mama into Mama Ji.
