Milni (ਮਿਲਣੀ) is the formal meeting of two families at a Punjabi wedding, held when the baraat arrives and before the main ceremony begins. Matching relatives from each side step forward in turn, exchange flower garlands and gifts, and greet one another as equals, so the wedding starts with the families, not only the couple.

## Meaning

The word comes from milna, to meet. Milni means introductions, and that is exactly its work. In earlier times many matches were arranged between families who barely knew each other, so a set, public meeting gave every senior relative a proper welcome. The couple is hardly the focus here: fathers, uncles and brothers are the actors, and the joining of two households is the point.

## How a milni is done

In a Sikh wedding the milni follows an Ardas, the prayer offered as the groom's party is received at the gurdwara or venue. Relatives are then paired by their place in the family, like with like: the eldest chachas meet the eldest chachas, grandfathers meet grandfathers, and so on down the line. Each pair exchanges garlands of flowers, often with a warm embrace, while everyone watches the two sides become one gathering.

As each meeting ends, the bride's relatives present shagun, a token of good luck, usually cash and clothes, to the groom's relatives, working in descending order of age. The gifts matter less than the order and the respect inside it: nobody senior is missed, nobody junior jumps the queue, and both families are seen to stand on level ground before the Anand Karaj or the Hindu wedding rites begin.

## Milni today

The form still holds in Punjab and across the diaspora, in Toronto, London and Melbourne as much as in Ludhiana. Some families now include women relatives in the line, and gifts may come from both sides, but the heart of it is unchanged: a handshake and a garland that quietly say, you are family now. It takes only a few minutes, yet guests remember it as the moment the two parties stopped being two.
