Naam Japna (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ) means remembering God by repeating and meditating on the Name in Punjabi and Sikh practice. It is one of the three pillars of Sikh life set out by Guru Nanak, alongside honest work and sharing with others. The Name here is not one label only: it stands for God's qualities, most often reached through the word Waheguru.

## What does Naam Japna mean?

Naam means the Name, meaning God's name and attributes, and japna means to repeat, recite and hold in mind. Put together, Naam Japna is the daily practice of remembering the Creator with focus, whether by quiet repetition in the mind, by reciting aloud, or by listening with attention. Sikhs also use the close forms Naam Japo and Naam Simran for the same remembrance.

It is not meant to be empty repetition. The point is to dwell on what the Name describes: a Creator who is timeless, present everywhere and full of mercy. Teachers say that holding those qualities in mind slowly pushes out the five thieves that trouble every person: lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.

## Why is Naam Japna one of the three pillars of Sikhism?

Guru Nanak gave his followers a practical way to live, not just ideas to believe. Its three pillars are Naam Japna, remembering God; Kirat Karo, earning an honest living; and Vand Chhako, sharing what you earn with others. Naam Japna comes first because remembrance is meant to shape the other two: a person who remembers God through the day is expected to work honestly and share freely.

## How do Sikhs practise Naam Japna?

Many Sikhs rise in the early hours, the amrit vela, wash, and sit for a while in quiet repetition, often of Waheguru, before the day begins. Others fold remembrance into kirtan, the singing of hymns, or listen to the daily prayers. The Sikh code of conduct, the Rehat Maryada, asks Sikhs to make this remembrance part of the everyday routine, and families often do it together at home or in the gurdwara.
