Parhna (ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ) is the Punjabi verb for to read and to study: looking at written words and taking in their meaning, and learning a subject over time. It covers reading a book for pleasure, studying for an exam, and reciting sacred text. ## What does parhna mean in Punjabi? Dictionaries give parhna, written ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ and pronounced paṛhnā, as the Punjabi word for the English verb read. Reading itself is defined as looking at and comprehending written or printed matter, and more widely as interpreting written or symbolic material. Parhna carries both of those senses. A child sounding out a first storybook is parhna, and so is an adult working through a land record, a newspaper report or a phone message and weighing what it means. ## How is parhna used? A student says she is parhna when she prepares for an exam, even if much of the work is listening, memorising and writing practice. The common pairing parh likh, read and write, is the everyday way of describing someone as educated: a parheya likheya person is a literate, schooled person. Parhna is also the verb of recitation. In Sikh homes and gurdwaras, reading Gurbani aloud is a daily practice, and study guides note that parhai was traditionally linked to the oral recitation of scriptures, so studying was as much about listening and speaking as about silent reading. The same verb therefore runs from the classroom to the prayer room without changing its shape. ## What is the difference between parhna and parhai? Parhna is the action, and parhai is the thing built from it. Parhai (ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ), the noun derived from the verb parhna, means study, schooling or education as a whole.
