Pathhe (ਪੱਠੇ) is the everyday Punjabi word for green fodder: the fresh, leafy crops cut and fed to cattle and buffaloes the same day. In a Punjab village, pathhe are not a side crop. They are the daily meal that keeps the herd fed and the milk flowing.

## What does pathhe mean in Punjabi?

Pathhe is the word used for fodder crops as they are actually handled on the farm: cut in the field, tied into a bundle and carried to the animals. It covers the crop standing green in the field and the bundle on the farmer's shoulder alike. English has no single word that matches it exactly; green fodder or forage comes closest. A close cousin, chara, is used more widely across north India for animal fodder in general, while pathhe is the word Punjab's own farm households reach for.

What grows as pathhe changes with the season. A Punjab Agricultural University study of farms in Ludhiana district found that in summer and the rainy season farmers fed their animals mainly pearl millet and maize, while berseem was the most commonly fed fodder crop during winter. Berseem and lucerne are the protein rich winter greens, and PAU advisers suggest 25 to 30 kilograms of leguminous green fodder a day for a milking animal when it is available in plenty.

## How are pathhe cut and fed?

The work is daily and still mostly done by hand. The farmer cuts the crop with a sickle, ties it into a bundle and carries it home on the shoulder or by cart, then chops it, often with a toka, the chaff cutter, so the animals can eat it easily and waste less of it. Fresh pathhe are usually mixed with dry fodder such as tudi, chopped wheat straw, because green fodder on its own is rich and watery: PAU winter feeding advice pairs the day's green fodder with 7 to 8 kilograms of dry fodder for a milking animal.

## What happens when pathhe run short?

Between one fodder crop finishing and the next coming ready, villages face a lean gap when green fodder is scarce and its price climbs. Surplus pathhe are therefore preserved as silage: the green crop is chopped, packed tightly into a pit and left to ferment, so it keeps for the lean months. Punjab's dairy sector now uses so much silage, made largely from maize, that agriculture reports note it is changing the market even for dry fodder like tudi.
