The word carries moral weight. To call a statement "sach" is to vouch for it; to call a person "sacha" is to praise their honesty. In a culture that prizes plain speaking, sach is among the highest compliments a statement can earn. ## Origin and etymology Sach comes from the Sanskrit word satya, meaning true or real. The same root runs through North India’s languages and gives Punjabi words like satyug (the age of truth), the idea that an era itself can be defined by how much truth it holds. In Gurmukhi the word is spelled ਸੱਚ, with the addak (ੱ) doubling the "ch" sound. In Shahmukhi, the Perso-Arabic script used for Punjabi in Pakistan, it is written سچ. ## Cultural context Truth sits at the very centre of Sikh thought. Guru Nanak’s Japji Sahib speaks of Sach Khand, the "realm of truth" where the Formless One dwells, and the Mul Mantar opens with Satnam, "the True Name". A famous line declares: "ਸਚਹੁ ਓਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ", truth is higher than everything, but higher still is truthful living. The sakhi of Guru Nanak’s "sacha sauda", the true bargain, tells how the young Nanak spent his father’s trading money feeding hungry travellers instead, calling it the only honest trade. Everyday speech keeps the same reverence: "sach karva hunda hai" (truth is bitter) admits that honesty is not always easy, but it is always worth it.
