Suhaga (ਸੁਹਾਗਾ), pronounced soo-haa-ga, is a Punjabi word for the heavy wooden planking implement a farmer drags across a ploughed field to break clods and level the soil. Pulled traditionally by pairs of oxen, it leaves the field smooth and even, holding moisture in the soil and giving seed a firm, level bed to germinate in.

## Meaning

The suhaga is built from two or three thick wooden planks joined side by side with iron bolts, with small wooden blocks set between the planks so that narrow gaps remain along its length. As it is dragged over the field, clods of earth catch in those gaps and crumble under its weight. The verb form is suhaga pherna, also said as suhaga dena: to run the suhaga over a field. The one word names both the tool and the job it does.

## Why do farmers run a suhaga after ploughing?

Ploughing leaves a field rough, full of clods and hollows. A level field matters because irrigation water spreads evenly over it instead of pooling in the low spots, and Punjab Agricultural University experts promote land levelling for exactly this reason: levelled land can save irrigation water and improve yield. The suhaga also presses the surface firm, so the sun and heat dry the soil less quickly and moisture stays in the ground longer. Farmers run it after sowing too, when a level, firm bed helps the seed germinate evenly.

## How was a suhaga pulled in the old days?

In the rain-fed farming of earlier times, the suhaga was drawn by two pairs of oxen, or by one pair of oxen together with a camel, and two men stood on the planks to weigh it down as it moved. When all farming depended on the rains, farmers ran it again and again over monsoon-wet land to hold the moisture in the soil until the winter crop was sown in October and November. Animal-drawn suhagas have now almost disappeared from Punjab farming, replaced by tractor-drawn versions made of wood and iron.
