Ummeed (ਉਮੀਦ) is the Punjabi word for hope or expectation: the quiet belief that good things can still happen even when the present looks difficult. Borrowed from Persian centuries ago, it has lived in Punjabi speech so long that nobody thinks of it as foreign, and it shares its work with aas, the native Punjabi word for hope.

## What does ummeed mean?

Ummeed is a noun meaning hope or expectation. It is the feeling of wanting something good and trusting that it can arrive: hope that a sick person gets better, hope that the harvest turns out well, hope that a letter brings good news. It always looks forward, never backward.

## Is ummeed the same as aas?

Aas (ਆਸ) is the native Punjabi word for hope, while ummeed came into Punjabi from Persian, a fact recorded in the Rekhta Urdu dictionary. The two words overlap so much that mainu aas hai and mainu ummeed hai both mean “I hope”. Ummeed sounds a little more formal, while aas sounds warmer and more familiar, and in everyday speech people use whichever comes to mind first.

## How do Punjabis use ummeed?

Ummeed travels with a few fixed verbs. Ummeed rakhna means to keep hope, ummeed karna means to hope, and ummeed tutna means for hope to break, the moment a person's expectations fall apart. To lose hope completely is na-ummidi (ਨਾਉਮੀਦੀ). Elders give the advice that sums up the whole word: ummeed kabhi na chhaddo, never give up hope, and farmers and families repeat it every season.
