Punjab recorded 292 stubble-burning cases on Saturday, October 31, its highest single-day count of this paddy season, taking the cumulative tally since September 15 to 1,339\. Tarn Taran leads the districts, and experts expect more fires as wheat sowing begins. ## How bad was the spike? The Tribune and the Times of India report that Saturday's 292 cases came two days after 194 fires on October 29\. Around 758 incidents, about 56 per cent of the season's total, were logged in the last six days. Even so, the count is about 18 per cent lower than the 1,642 recorded at this point last year. ## Which districts are worst hit? Tarn Taran tops the season tally with 455 cases, followed by Amritsar (187), Ferozepur (141), Gurdaspur (95) and Kapurthala (84). On Saturday alone, Tarn Taran logged 50 fires, Ferozepur 36 and Sangrur 32\. Punjabi Jagran reports the 292 figure is about 30 per cent above the 224 cases on the same day in 2025. ## Why are fires rising now? Experts quoted by The Tribune link the early surge in Tarn Taran and Amritsar to early paddy harvesting there, as many farmers also grow vegetables and burn residue to clear fields quickly. Fires usually start in the border districts and then move to the Doaba and Malwa regions. Sangrur, Moga, Bathinda and Muktsar are expected to see more as harvesting speeds up. More than 65 per cent of the paddy area, over 32 lakh hectares, has been harvested, leaving about 35 per cent still standing. ## What action has the state taken? Authorities say 426 show-cause notices have gone to nodal and supervisory officers, 246 FIRs have been registered against farmers, and red entries made in the revenue records of 297 farmers. Environmental compensation of over Rs 17 lakh has been imposed, with nearly Rs 13 lakh recovered. The Times of India adds that Punjab accounted for about 88 per cent of Saturday's 332 cases across seven states. ## How many farm fires has Punjab recorded this season? The satellite-based count stands at 1,339 since September 15, about 18 per cent below last year at the same stage. ## Which district has the most cases? Tarn Taran, with 455 cases so far. ## When is the peak expected? Wheat sowing begins on November 1, and officials and experts expect incidents to rise further in the coming days. ## In this story · from the Kosh * [**Tarn Taran**District, Majha](https://jugti.com/kosh/places/tarn-taran/) **Jugti is free and independent.** Reader support keeps Jugti going.
