Dr Harvinder Singh Dhaliwal, a horticulture scientist and former Dean of the College of Agriculture, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The decision was taken at a meeting of PAU's Board of Management in Chandigarh, according to reports. He takes charge as Punjab tries to move away from its long-running wheat-paddy cycle amid falling groundwater and thinning farm profits. ## Who is Dr Harvinder Singh Dhaliwal? Born in Mansa, he earned a BSc Agriculture (Honours) from PAU in 1984, an MSc in Pomology in 1986 and a PhD in Pomology in 1991, and won the Sardar Bahadur Lal Singh Gold Medal for topping his MSc. At PAU he has served as Dean of the College of Agriculture, Additional Director of Research (Horticulture) and Director of Extension Education. Punjabi Jagran puts his experience at about 31 years. ## What are his main achievements? Punjabi Jagran reports he contributed to 28 crop-variety recommendations, including banana and aonla and 11 fruit varieties such as kinnow, led six research projects and authored 189 research publications. He also helped set up a leaf-analysis laboratory and win national recognition for PAU's virus-free plant nursery. ## Who led PAU before him? Dr Satbir Singh Gosal's term ended on August 18\. The registrar was given charge of day-to-day administration afterwards, reports said. ## How was the appointment received? PAU Teachers' Association president Dr H S Kingra called it the best possible decision by the Board of Management, saying Punjab's farming needs diversification and a leading horticulture scientist is well placed to lead it. ## Why does a horticulture expert matter for Punjab farming? Fruits, vegetables and other high-value crops are among the options for shifting farmers away from paddy, and PAU's recommendations shape what farmers sow. Observers quoted in reports expect his expertise to push crop diversification. ## What is PAU? Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana is the state's main farm university, known for crop varieties, research and extension work with farmers.
