The film opened only two days ago, on 16 October. ## What Neeru Bajwa announced In a social media post on Sunday, Bajwa said she and her team had decided to put the film on hold, according to Babushahi, Punjabi Mania, ABP Sanjha and Ajit. From 19 October, Thaapi will not be screened in any cinema in India or abroad until further notice, Babushahi reported. "Nothing is bigger than Punjab for us," Bajwa said. She added that she is who she is because of Punjab and Punjabiyat, and that the film was made so that Punjab's fields would see excitement again. Cinema, she said, exists for the people and can never be bigger than the people. "We were with Punjab earlier, we are with Punjab today and we will always be with Punjab in the future," she wrote, as reported by Babushahi. No fresh release date has been announced. ABP Sanjha reported that the film will be shown again only once the situation in Punjab improves. ## The Jhota case behind the decision Jhota, who campaigned against the open sale of drugs at chemist shops, was shot dead in Mansa on 13 October, according to The Hindu and NDTV. Police have said he was shot by a medical store owner after he confronted him, and the main accused has been arrested. More than five days later, his family and a justice committee have still not carried out the cremation, and they are standing by their demands, ABP Sanjha reported. These include a CBI probe and the resignations of the chief minister and the state police chief. The committee has announced sit-ins outside the homes of AAP MLAs on 19 October from noon to 3 pm, ABP Sanjha said. On Saturday, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon joined the protest in Mansa and urged people to wear black turbans and dupattas until justice is delivered, NDTV reported. The AAP government has said it is taking strict action against drug traffickers. ## Why it matters for Pollywood Thaapi is a Punjabi sports drama that arrived in theatres on 16 October. A pause just days after release is unusual in an industry that depends heavily on the opening weekend, which makes the decision a notable gesture of solidarity rather than a routine scheduling change. Bajwa did not say how long the break would last. ## Why did Neeru Bajwa pull Thaapi from cinemas? She said she and her team decided that nothing is more important than Punjab and its people given the current situation in the state, where protests over Parvinder Singh Jhota's killing continue. ## When did Thaapi release and when will it be pulled? The film released in cinemas on 16 October 2026\. Screenings stop from 19 October in India and abroad, according to Bajwa's announcement. ## Will Thaapi return to theatres? No date has been given. Bajwa said the film will be held back until the situation in Punjab improves. ## Key facts * Thaapi opened in cinemas on 16 October 2026. * Neeru Bajwa announced on 18 October that the film will not be screened in India or abroad from 19 October until further notice (Babushahi). * Bajwa said: "Nothing is bigger than Punjab for us." * Anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota was shot dead in Mansa on 13 October; his family and a justice committee are still demanding a CBI probe. ## In this story · from the Kosh [ਨNeeru BajwaPerson · Actor, director, producer→](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/neeru-bajwa/)[ਪParvinder Singh JhotaPerson · Anti-drug activist→](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/parvinder-singh-jhota/) [ਨNeeru BajwaPerson · Actor, director, producer](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/neeru-bajwa/)[ਪParvinder Singh JhotaPerson · Anti-drug activist](https://jugti.com/kosh/people/parvinder-singh-jhota/) ## More from Entertainment[All →](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/) [Diljit Dosanjh Moves Delhi Show to Oct 30, Away From 1984 Anniversaryਦਿਲਜੀਤ ਦੋਸਾਂਝ ਨੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਸ਼ੋਅ 30 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਤਾ, 1984 ਦੀ ਵਰ੍ਹੇਗੰਢ ਤੋਂ ਹਟਾਇਆ5 days ago](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/diljit-dosanjh-delhi-show-moved-oct-30-1984/)[Residents, Activist Object to Jasmine Sandlas's Mohali Show; Organiser Says Approvals in Placeਜੈਸਮੀਨ ਸੈਂਡਲਾਸ ਦੇ ਮੋਹਾਲੀ ਸ਼ੋਅ 'ਤੇ ਵਸਨੀਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਾਰਕੁਨ ਦਾ ਇਤਰਾਜ਼; ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ10 Oct](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/jasmine-sandlas-mohali-show-sector-67-residents-gmada-objection/)[Moosewala Hologram World Tour Opens in Toronto Tonightਮੂਸੇਵਾਲਾ ਦਾ ਹੋਲੋਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਵਰਲਡ ਟੂਰ ਅੱਜ ਟੋਰਾਂਟੋ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ09 Oct](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/moosewala-hologram-world-tour-opens-toronto-scotiabank-arena/)[Nana Patekar Dies at 75 After Cardiac Arrest at His Goa Homeਨਾਨਾ ਪਾਟੇਕਰ ਦਾ ਦਿਹਾਂਤ: 75 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲ ਦੇ ਦੌਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਤ07 Oct](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/nana-patekar-dies-at-75/) ## Earlier in Entertainment[All →](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/) [Entertainment · 07 OctBomb Threat Emails to 10 Ahmedabad Schools Name Diljit Dosanjh's Delhi and Ahmedabad Concertsਅਹਿਮਦਾਬਾਦ ਦੇ 10 ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਬ ਦੀ ਧਮਕੀ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਈਮੇਲਾਂ, ਦਿਲਜੀਤ ਦੋਸਾਂਝ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤੇ ਅਹਿਮਦਾਬਾਦ ਸ਼ੋਆਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/ahmedabad-schools-bomb-threat-emails-diljit-dosanjh-concerts/)[Entertainment · 04 OctDiljit Dosanjh announces AURA India Tour across seven citiesਦਿਲਜੀਤ ਦੋਸਾਂਝ ਨੇ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਔਰਾ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਟੂਰ, ਸੱਤ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਨਸਰਟ](https://jugti.com/news/entertainment/diljit-dosanjh-aura-india-tour/)[Diaspora · 30 SepDiljit Dosanjh Becomes First Punjabi Singer to Headline Wembley Stadiumਦਿਲਜੀਤ ਦੋਸਾਂਝ ਵੈਂਬਲੇ ਸਟੇਡੀਅਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈੱਡਲਾਈਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗਾਇਕ ਬਣੇ](https://jugti.com/news/diaspora/diljit-dosanjh-wembley-headline/)[Diaspora · 30 SepShots Fired at Ammy Virk's Convoy in Abbotsford, Canada; Singer Denies Being Targetedਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਐਬਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਐਮੀ ਵਿਰਕ ਦੇ ਕਾਫ਼ਲੇ 'ਤੇ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਚੱਲੀਆਂ; ਗਾਇਕ ਨੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ](https://jugti.com/news/diaspora/ammy-virk-convoy-shooting-canada/) ## Keep exploring Everything in the Kosh, with sources.
