The Supreme Court on Thursday, October 8, 2026, put off to Friday the Punjab government's challenge to a High Court order directing the CBI to probe corruption allegations linked to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's office. It granted no interim relief in the meantime. ## What did the Supreme Court decide on Thursday? The bench adjourned the state's plea to October 9, according to The Hindu and The Tribune. Hindustan Times reported that the court declined to pass any interim order against the probe without first letting both judges on the bench examine the matter. Times Now reported that no protection was given against "precipitative action" by the CBI before Friday. ## What is the Punjab government asking for? The state wants a stay on the High Court direction, which asked the CBI to register a case and report within two months. In the alternative, it has asked the court to let the Punjab Bureau of Investigation complete a preliminary inquiry and file an action-taken report, and to bar agencies from relying on the High Court's observations until the petition is decided, The Tribune reported. ## How did the case get here? The High Court acted on a petition by advocate Nikhil Saraf. The CBI then registered a case on Tuesday, October 6, against Mann's officer on special duty and other public servants, and searched locations in Punjab and Chandigarh.
