Early life and theatre roots
Davinder Singh Kharoud — the screen name Dev Kharoud came later — was born on 22 April in Patiala, Punjab. Before the film cameras found him, the stage did: he trained as a theatre artist, working as a comedian on stage alongside Bhagwant Mann and playing roles in productions under veteran directors. The theatre years gave him the tools his later screen career would lean on — comic timing, physical presence and an ease with live audiences.
Television and early films
Like many Punjabi actors of his generation, Kharoud reached films through television. He appeared in Punjabi teleserials — among them Agg De Kalire, Jugnu Mast Mast, Asan Hun Tur Jana and Roop Basant — and in daily soaps on the Doordarshan Jalandhar channel. His earliest film credit is a small role in Dil Apna Punjabi (2006); he followed it with Hashar – A Love Story (2008), and in 2010 he both produced and acted in Kabbadi Ik Mohhabat. In Sadda Haq (2013) he played Rajwant Singh, a character inspired by Balwant Singh Rajoana — a role that put him in the headlines.
Rupinder Gandhi and the breakout
The turning point came in 2015 with Rupinder Gandhi – The Gangster..?, in which Kharoud played the title role — the real-life figure recast as a Robin Hood-style outlaw. In 2018 Kharoud headlined Dakuan Da Munda as Mintu Gurusaria, in a film drawn from the autobiography of the gangster-turned-writer — one of the biggest Punjabi openings of that year. 2019 brought three releases: Kaka Ji, DSP Dev and Blackia, the last of them a major hit that collected around ₹18 crore worldwide. He has since stayed in the action-drama lane that suits him: Zakhmi (2020), Dakuaan Da Munda 2 (2022), Shareek 2 (2022, opposite Jimmy Sheirgill), Bai Ji Kuttange (2022), Yaaran Da Rutbaa (2023) and Maurh (2023), in which he played Kishna Maurh alongside Ammy Virk.
