Early life

Durga Rangila grew up in Punjab steeped in the folk songs of the countryside, and he came up through the live circuit before making records. Like many Punjabi singers of his generation, he learned his trade in front of village audiences, where a singer earns his reputation one stage at a time.

Rangila came up the hard way: singing at village functions and small stages, building a following one performance at a time. In the cassette era, that was how Punjabi singers were made — there were no shortcuts, only the judgment of a live audience. The folk songs of rural Punjab were his first repertoire, and they stayed at the centre of his music even as his production grew more modern.

Career

Rangila's breakthrough albums — Kali Gani Mitran Di, with tracks like 'Pith Te War', 'Gut Nachdi Di' and 'Tera Nachana'; Na Layo Na Layo, featuring 'Heer Ranjha', 'Tota Ki Mangda' and 'Nibhaiyan Kiven Jandian'; and Noor Tere Naina Da, with 'Mirza' and 'Pind Pekeyan De' — established him as a dependable hitmaker in Punjabi folk-pop. Ji Ve Sohnia Ji followed with 'Doli Chakio Kaharo' and 'Behja Sohniye'.

His reach extended to cinema: he sang 'Zaat', the inaugural song filmed on Amrish Puri and Raj Babbar in the film Shaheed Udham Singh. In February 2015 he featured alongside Charanjit Ahuja in a song for the charity Khalsa Aid. In a PTC Punjabi interview he noted that he had completed 22 years in the Punjabi music industry, reflecting on his struggles, his parents and his fans.

His album run through the 2000s and 2010s was remarkably consistent. Kali Gani Mitran Di gave him 'Pith Te War' and 'Gut Nachdi Di'; Na Layo Na Layo delivered 'Heer Ranjha' and 'Tota Ki Mangda'; Noor Tere Naina Da offered 'Mirza' and 'Pind Pekeyan De'. These were not experimental records — they were sturdy, melodic folk-pop albums that sold because people wanted to hear them at home and at functions.

The film song 'Zaat' in Shaheed Udham Singh, picturised on veterans Amrish Puri and Raj Babbar, took his voice to cinema audiences, and his 2015 appearance in the Khalsa Aid charity song showed an artist willing to lend his name to a cause.

Major works

Kali Gani Mitran Di, Na Layo Na Layo, Noor Tere Naina Da and Ji Ve Sohnia Ji are his landmark albums, with 'Pith Te War', 'Luk Luk Rovengi', 'Rabb Warga Tera Yaar' and 'Vakh Roven' among his best-remembered songs.

Personal life

Rangila keeps a low public profile off stage, letting his long-running stage career speak for itself.

Rangila has kept a low profile away from the stage. In his PTC Punjabi interview he spoke warmly of his parents and his fans, crediting them for sustaining a career that has now passed the two-decade mark.

Legacy

With more than two decades of recordings behind him, Durga Rangila belongs to the generation that carried Punjabi folk singing from the cassette era into the digital age without losing its village roots.

Not every singer reinvents the form; some keep it alive. Durga Rangila's legacy is steadiness — more than twenty years of folk singing that carried the village tradition through the cassette era into the streaming age.
