Early life

Gurnam Bhullar was born on 8 February 1994 in Kamal Wala, a village in Punjab's Fazilka district, to Baljit Singh Bhullar, a Punjab government employee, and Lakhwinder Kaur Bhullar. He has a sister, Navrit Kaur. Music was his childhood — he sang in every school competition — and he also played on his school's under-14 basketball team.

The turning point came while he was in the eighth standard: he entered season 5 of the Punjabi singing reality show Awaz Punjab Di and won it. He later appeared on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Voice of Punjab, and then studied music formally, earning a B.A. in Music from Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, where he was active in youth festivals across music, theatre and bhangra.

Career

His first single, Heer Jehiya Kurian, arrived in 2014, followed by Rakhli Pyar Nal (2016) and Driver (2017). Then came Diamond. Released in January 2018 with Roopi Gill, written by Vicky Dhaliwal and released on Jass Records, the song became a phenomenon — crossing 500 million views on YouTube and establishing Bhullar as a front-rank Punjabi pop star. Its success was built on a clean, melodic folk-pop sound that stood apart from the harder hip-hop wave in Punjabi music.

He consolidated with albums Dead End (2020) and Majestic Laane (2022) and a run of hit singles, while moving into acting. His film debut as a lead came with Guddiyan Patole (2019), opposite Sonam Bajwa and Tania, followed by Surkhi Bindi (2019), Lekh (2022), Main Viyah Nahi Karona Tere Naal (2022) and Parinda Paar Geyaa — making him one of the few Punjabi singers to sustain parallel careers in music and cinema.

Major works

Diamond remains his signature — one of the most-watched Punjabi songs of all time. His discography spans the albums Dead End, Majestic Laane and Imagination (2023), with lyrics by writers including Vicky Dhaliwal, Kaptaan and Gill Raunta, and music from Desi Crew, Gur Sidhu and others. As an actor his most substantial role came in Lekh (2022), a romantic drama that showed a quieter register than his pop persona.

In July 2021 he was briefly detained by Punjab Police for filming a music video during COVID-19 restrictions — an incident that made headlines but did little to slow his career.

His live shows draw massive crowds in Punjab and across the diaspora, and his clean image — no controversies beyond that one brush with the police — has made him a favourite with family audiences and brands alike. With Diamond still racking up views years after release, he has the rare luxury of a signature song that never quite leaves the charts.

Personal life

Bhullar married Dr Balpreet Kaur in November 2023. He is based in Chandigarh and is known for keeping his public image clean and family-oriented in an industry not always known for either.

Legacy

Gurnam Bhullar represents the reality-show-to-stardom pipeline that reshaped Punjabi music in the 2010s: a small-town boy with classical training who won a TV contest and then, through one perfect song, became a generational voice. Diamond's half-billion views are the measure of how completely he arrived.
