Early life

Neeru Bajwa was born on 26 August 1980 in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, to Indian immigrant parents Jaswant Bajwa and Surinder Bajwa. She grew up with two sisters — Rubina, who also became an actress, and Sabrina — and a brother, Suhail. A self-described high-school dropout more drawn to glamour than textbooks, she left L.A. Matheson Secondary School and moved to Mumbai to chase a career in films.

The Bajwa household in Surrey was a typical immigrant home where Bollywood played on weekends, and Neeru absorbed its glamour completely. She has been candid about her lack of interest in school — in her documentary Bollywood Bound she presents herself as a teenager who knew exactly what she wanted: the movies. Moving to Mumbai alone as a young woman took nerve, and her first years were the usual grind of auditions and small roles.

Career

Bajwa began in 1998 with Dev Anand's Hindi film Main Solah Baras Ki, then worked in Hindi television before finding her home in Punjabi cinema with Asa Nu Maan Watna Da (2004). A run of hits followed — Jihne Mera Dil Luteya (2011), Jatt & Juliet (2012) and Jatt & Juliet 2 (2013) opposite Diljit Dosanjh, Sardaar Ji (2015), Laung Laachi (2018), Shadaa (2019), Kali Jotta (2023) and Jatt & Juliet 3 (2024).

She is a three-time PTC Punjabi Film Award winner and received the Critics' Award for Best Actress at the inaugural Filmfare Awards Punjabi for Channo Kamli Yaar Di (2017). In 2023 she made her Hollywood debut in the supernatural thriller It Lives Inside. She has also stepped behind the camera as a director and producer.

Punjabi cinema gave her what Bollywood had not: stardom. Asa Nu Maan Watna Da (2004) put her on the Punjabi map, and by the time Jatt & Juliet arrived in 2012 she was the industry's leading lady. Her chemistry with Diljit Dosanjh powered the franchise through three films, while Sardaar Ji, Laung Laachi and Shadaa showed her comic timing. Bajwa married Harry Jawandha in 2015 and has three daughters. She divides her time between Canada and Mumbai.
