Early life
Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, a border district town in Punjab, to Lakhwinder Singh, an agriculturist, and Keart Gill. His father, who had dreamed of playing cricket himself, recognised the boy's obsession early — Shubman, he said, slept with a bat and ball from the age of three. Farm workers were asked to bowl at the child to sharpen his batting.
Seeing the talent, the family moved to Mohali so Shubman could train near the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. The gamble announced itself in 2014, when he scored 351 in a 587-run partnership for Punjab Under-16s, followed by a double century on his Vijay Merchant Trophy debut. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a half-century and then a century in his second match.
Career
Gill was vice-captain of India's 2018 Under-19 World Cup-winning side and the tournament's Player of the Tournament, scoring 372 runs at 124 — his unbeaten 102 in the semi-final against Pakistan drew praise from Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. He made his ODI debut against New Zealand in January 2019 and his Test debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in December 2020, where his fluent 45 and 35 not out helped India to a famous win, followed by a match-turning 91 in the Gabba triumph.
In January 2023, aged 23, he smashed 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand in Hyderabad — the youngest double century in men's ODI history. He became the fastest player to 2,000 ODI runs (38 innings) and later 2,500, and was named ICC Men's Player of the Month four times, a record. He was India's vice-captain for the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph and was appointed India's Test and ODI captain, leading the side on the 2025 England tour where he scored 754 runs in the series — the second-most ever by a captain in a Test series.
Major works
His landmark innings include the 208 against New Zealand (2023), the 269 against England at Edgbaston (2025) — the highest Test score by an Indian captain and by an Indian outside Asia — and the 91 at the Gabba (2021). In the IPL he has starred for the Kolkata Knight Riders and, since 2022, captained the Gujarat Titans. His 2023 World Cup campaign yielded over 350 runs as India reached the final.
Gill's batting is built on timing and placement rather than brute force — an elegant, high-elbowed technique that drew comparisons with the greats even before his twentieth birthday, and that has held up under the pressure of captaincy and the scrutiny of a billion fans.
Personal life
Gill is unmarried and based between Mohali and Mumbai. Known as 'Prince' to fans, he is among the most marketable young athletes in India, with a calm public persona that contrasts with his aggressive batting.
Legacy
Still in his twenties, Shubman Gill has already redrawn several record books and taken on the India captaincy across formats. The Fazilka boy whose father moved the family for his cricket now carries the expectations once placed on Tendulkar and Kohli — and, on current evidence, he is built for the weight.
