Early life

Pahuldip Singh Sandhu was born on 5 February 1987 in Forest Gate, London, and grew up in Newham, East London. Raised in a Sikh family, he was surrounded by harmoniums and tablas — his mother was a music teacher. At ten he was DJing jungle music with his brothers, and a teacher introduced him to the production software Fruity Loops in his early teens. His first production was 'Dreams' for the grime artist D Double E. His stage name was coined by a Jamaican friend, a reference to the kara — the steel bangle worn as one of the five articles of Sikh faith.

At seventeen his path was interrupted when he was imprisoned for possession of a firearm. During a three-year sentence he produced beats on a keyboard for fellow inmates and rappers, an experience that steered him toward rap and grime.

Newham in the 1990s and 2000s was one of London's great musical melting pots, and the young Pahuldip Sandhu absorbed all of it — the harmoniums and tablas of his mother's music teaching at home, jungle on the streets, grime on pirate radio. DJing at ten and producing on Fruity Loops in his early teens, he was a prodigy with a fast-developing ear. The prison sentence at seventeen could have ended the story; instead, the keyboard beats he made for fellow inmates became his apprenticeship in rap production.

Career

After release, Banglez contributed production to mixtapes across the South London rap scene and ran a home studio where he gave free studio time to artists including Wiley and members of Roll Deep. His breakthrough as a producer came through work with Mist, MoStack, J Hus and Dave — including Dave and MoStack's 'No Words'.

In 2018 his own single 'Bad', featuring Yungen, MoStack, Mr Eazi and Not3s, reached the UK top 30. His highest-charting single, 'Fashion Week' featuring AJ Tracey and MoStack, peaked at No. 7 in 2019. Signed to Warner Bros. Records, he collaborated with composer Pritam on the music of Ayan Mukerji's Bollywood fantasy Brahmastra (2022).

Banglez's gift is melody: his beats have a musicality that set them apart in the often austere world of UK rap. The home studio where he gave free time to Wiley and Roll Deep members built him a network of loyalty, and when the new wave of British rap broke through — Mist, MoStack, J Hus, Dave — Banglez was the producer they called. 'No Words' by Dave and MoStack showed his touch at its most refined.

Stepping out as a lead artist with 'Bad' and then 'Fashion Week' proved he could carry a record himself, not just build them for others. The Brahmastra collaboration with Pritam was a different kind of test — bringing his UK-honed instincts to Bollywood's biggest canvas — and he approached it, by his own account, as a student of a different method.

Major works

'Bad' (2018), 'Fashion Week' (2019), 'I See You Shining' with Nines, and his production catalogue for Mist, MoStack, J Hus, Dave and AJ Tracey.

Legacy

From a prison keyboard to the UK top ten, Steel Banglez became one of the most sought-after producers in British music — a Punjabi kid from Newham whose beats reshaped UK rap and grime.

Steel Banglez's career is a redemption story set to a beat — from a prison cell to the UK top ten — and a reminder that British music's most exciting sounds often come from its most overlooked postcodes.
