Where is Athwal?

Athwal is a village in Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Batala, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarsika community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037787, and it covers 99 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 842 people in Athwal: 446 men and 396 women, living in 169 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 99 hectares, the population density works out to about 851 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 888 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 103, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 368 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.29 per cent and women at 63.28 per cent. The census recorded 311 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 204 main workers, the largest group, 97, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 52 cultivators on their own land and 45 agricultural labourers. A further 107 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Athwal's land. Of the village's 99 hectares, 88 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (88 hectares). About 11 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 72 cultivators and 77 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
