History

Attari is the village-town with India's last railway station before the Pakistan border. In 1947 the Radcliffe Line made Attari the main land crossing between the two countries.

The Samjhauta Express began running on 22 July 1976, linking Attari with Lahore. Every evening, thousands gather at the nearby Attari–Wagah border for the flag-lowering ceremony.

Attari stands west of Amritsar city, about 3 km from the border. The 2011 census counted 8,921 people in the village. The Border Security Force and customs presence is part of daily life here.

ਇਤਿਹਾਸ

ਅਟਾਰੀ ਭਾਰਤ–ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿੰਡ-ਕਸਬਾ ਹੈ। 1947 ਵਿੱਚ ਰੈੱਡਕਲਿਫ਼ ਲਾਈਨ ਨੇ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੀ ਲਾਂਘਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

22 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1976 ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਹੋਈ, ਜੋ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਤੱਕ ਚੱਲਦੀ ਸੀ। ਅਟਾਰੀ–ਵਾਹਗਾ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਝੰਡਾ ਉਤਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਸਮ ਦੇਖਣ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਲੋਕ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

2011 ਦੀ ਮਰਦਮਸ਼ੁਮਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਆਬਾਦੀ 8,921 ਸੀ। ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਲ ਅਤੇ ਕਸਟਮ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਗੀ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।
