Where is Chichrewal?

Chichrewal is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038035, and it covers 570 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,268 people in Chichrewal: 656 men and 612 women, living in 234 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 570 hectares, the population density works out to about 222 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 933 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 148, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 471 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.59 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.08 per cent and women at 61.86 per cent. The census recorded 424 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 392 main workers, the largest group, 157, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 149 cultivators on their own land and 82 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 32 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chichrewal's land. Of the village's 570 hectares, 508 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (382 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (126 hectares). About 62 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 154 cultivators and 158 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Neighbouring villages include Paddri, Gagobua, Sarai Diwana and Buchar Kalan.
