Where is Chima Kalan?

Chima Kalan is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 24 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038043, and it covers 343 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,759 people in Chima Kalan: 895 men and 864 women, living in 318 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 343 hectares, the population density works out to about 513 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 965 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 255, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 760 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.03 per cent and women at 67.96 per cent. The census recorded 515 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 399 main workers, the largest group, 183, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 122 other workers in trade, transport and services and 68 agricultural labourers. A further 116 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (278 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. Neighbouring villages include Sukkar Chak, Chahal, Bir Raja Teja Singh and Dhala.
