Where is Bajakhana?

Bajakhana is a village of Jaito tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jaito, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kot Kapura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035626, and it covers 1,527 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,422 people in Bajakhana: 3,301 men and 3,121 women, living in 1,243 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 1,527 hectares, the population density works out to about 421 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 945 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 728, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,337 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.16 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.89 per cent and women at 67.27 per cent. The census recorded 2,107 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 1,895 main workers, the largest group, 665, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 635 other workers in trade, transport and services and 559 agricultural labourers. A further 212 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,354 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (32 hectares). About 140 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Jaito, the tehsil headquarters, and Faridkot town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Malla, Rauwala, Dod (Jaitu) and Okandwala.
