Where is Kahanpura?

Kahanpura is a village in Amloh tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Khanna, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Amloh community development block and is served by the Kahanpur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032865, and it covers 184 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 876 people in Kahanpura: 470 men and 406 women, living in 157 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 184 hectares, the population density works out to about 476 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 864 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 98, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 245 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.48 per cent and women at 75.76 per cent. The census recorded 278 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 246 main workers, the largest group, 189, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 47 other workers in trade, transport and services and 5 agricultural labourers. A further 32 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Kahanpura's land. Of the village's 184 hectares, 157 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 156 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (156 hectares). About 27 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 196 cultivators and 10 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Salana Jiwan Singh Wala, Shahpur, Majri Raian and Khumna.
