Where is Machhrai Kalan?

Machhrai Kalan is a village of Amloh tehsil in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amloh, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Amloh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032854, and it covers 381 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 955 people in Machhrai Kalan: 480 men and 475 women, living in 181 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 381 hectares, the population density works out to about 251 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 990 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 103, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 494 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.36 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.88 per cent and women at 67.91 per cent. The census recorded 367 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 313 main workers, the largest group, 126, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 104 agricultural labourers and 70 cultivators on their own land. A further 54 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
