Where is Feroze Shah?

Feroze Shah is a village of Firozpur tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Talwandi Bhai, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ghall Khurd community development block and is served by the Fer0Ze Shah gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034473, and it covers 1,245 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,609 people in Feroze Shah: 1,899 men and 1,710 women, living in 671 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 1,245 hectares, the population density works out to about 290 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 900 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 424, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,170 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.44 per cent and women at 66.47 per cent. The census recorded 1,270 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 1,163 main workers, the largest group, 423, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 366 cultivators on their own land and 348 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 107 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Feroze Shah's land. Of the village's 1,245 hectares, 1,054 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (236 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (300 hectares). About 172 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 375 cultivators and 435 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. The directory recorded Talwandi Bhai, about 18 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Firozpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Ferozepur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bhambawala Urf Landa, Arazi Katoria, Machhiwara and Kaliewala.
