Where is Kari Kalan?

Kari Kalan is a village of Guru Harsahai tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Guru Har Sahai, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mamdot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034725, and it covers 477 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,494 people in Kari Kalan: 761 men and 733 women, living in 295 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 477 hectares, the population density works out to about 313 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 963 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 175, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 816 people, about 55 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.55 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.94 per cent and women at 61.82 per cent. The census recorded 476 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 397 main workers, the largest group, 229, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 85 cultivators on their own land and 55 agricultural labourers. A further 79 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
