Where is Gohalwarh?

Gohalwarh is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and is served by the Ghohlrarh gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037873, and it covers 435 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,102 people in Gohalwarh: 1,628 men and 1,474 women, living in 511 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 435 hectares, the population density works out to about 713 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 386, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 498 people, about 16 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.74 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.87 per cent and women at 66.41 per cent. The census recorded 1,083 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 1,037 main workers, the largest group, 713, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 234 cultivators on their own land and 68 household industry workers. A further 46 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (301 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (76 hectares). About 54 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 245 cultivators and 25 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
