Where is Deeda?

Deeda is a village of Dinanagar tehsil in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dinanagar, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dinanagar community development block and is served by the Deeda, Abadi Dida Sansi gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027855, and it covers 142 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,729 people in Deeda: 883 men and 846 women, living in 338 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 142 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,218 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 958 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 206, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 895 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.04 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.68 per cent and women at 73.32 per cent. The census recorded 493 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 431 main workers, the largest group, 236, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 101 cultivators on their own land and 86 agricultural labourers. A further 62 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Deeda's land. Of the village's 142 hectares, 102 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (47 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (55 hectares). About 40 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. The census recorded 105 cultivators and 113 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
