Where is Gadarian?

Gadarian is a village in Dinanagar tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gurdaspur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028267, and it covers 70 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 560 people in Gadarian: 294 men and 266 women, living in 104 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 70 hectares, the population density works out to about 800 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 57, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 342 people, about 61 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.73 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.25 per cent and women at 70.09 per cent. The census recorded 178 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 175 main workers, the largest group, 103, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 37 agricultural labourers and 33 cultivators on their own land. A further 3 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Gadarian's land. Of the village's 70 hectares, 62 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 61 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (51 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (10 hectares). About 8 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 33 cultivators and 37 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
